“By combining European minimalist design with revolutionary material science, we have created a device that offers incredible new experiences for the end-user and a giant step towards greener practices in tech. I’m so proud of the team in their dedication to this project and delighted that their hard work has been recognized by such a prestigious design body”, said Firas Khalifeh, CEO and Founder, Carbon Mobile GmbH.

Carbon Mobile was founded to deliver disruptive technologies to a sector that for years has been stagnating in new design thinking, especially where materials are concerned. The world’s first carbon fibre monocoque smartphone was made possible thanks to Carbon Mobile’s patented HyRECM Technology. 4 years in development, HyRECM Technology fuses carbon fibre with complementary composites to solve the common connectivity challenges associated with the material and unlocks its potential to deliver more miniaturized tech.

Since launching on 1st March 2021, the Carbon 1 MK II has made a big impact in the smartphone industry. Featured in over 500 articles in 48 countries, it’s a strong start from the Berlin-based start-up on a mission to accelerate the world’s adoption of high-performance materials in personal electronics.

This is just a start for Carbon Mobile. Work has already begun on broadening the application of their enabling technologies to create a diverse range of super lightweight, thin, strong, and more sustainable connected devices.

The Red Dot awards date back as far as 1955 and recognises the best products of the year. The roughly 50 jurors were once again true to the motto “In search of good design and innovation” in the 2021 competition. The international panel of experts comprises specialists from a wide variety of sectors. They scrutinized the products entered in the competition in a process that spanned several days and were guided by assessment criteria such as the product’s formal quality, ergonomics, and longevity.

The Carbon 1 MK II can be seen in the online exhibition on the Red Dot website from 21 June 2021. That date also marks the beginning of the Red Dot Design Week, during which this year’s award winners and [company or designer/design studio] will be celebrated online.

From 22 June 2021, the Carbon 1 MK II will also be included in the exhibition “Design on Stage” in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, where all of the award-winning products are showcased. Visitors to the museum can experience the quality of the designs in a space that features contemporary design solutions and historical industrial architecture. The Red Dot Design Yearbook 2021/2022 comes out in August. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art and trends in product design.
